Modern Indian Architecture

India's architecture of modern times shows a clear pattern of British architecture. However, religious places such as the temple, mosque remained the same as before. Regardless of whether the British harmed India's wealth and culture, but there is no doubt, they have preserved the architecture of India's ancient art.

The British were never behind in architecture. Examples of British architecture are Victoria Memorial, St. George, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Rashtrapati Bhavan.

It is not that before the independence, only the British presented samples of architecture. The Indian king was not behind this. Jaipur Bhawan Palace of Jaipur is the best example of this.


Presidential residence, Shimla

Shimla was the summer capital of the British. Here he built Viceroy Lodge, the residence of Viceroy, which is called Rashtrapati Bhavan. It was designed by British architect Henry Irwin. It was constructed from 1880 to 1888.


Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

It was built in 1887 and it is a railway station located in Mumbai. It was first called Victoria Tarminus, but in 1996, it was named Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. It is one of the UNESCO destinations.

 

Victoria Memorial, Kolkata

It was constructed from 1906 to 1921 by the British. It is located in Kolkata. It was built in memory of Queen Victoria after her death.

 

St Paul's Cathedral

This is the cathedral in Kolkata. It was built in 1847.


St. George's Fort, Chennai

It was constructed by the British in Chennai in 1644. This is a great example of British architecture.


Gateway of India

It is located in Mumbai. It was built in 1911. It was formed to welcome the arrival of King George V and Queen Mary to India.

 

New Delhi

British people transferred the country's capital from Kolkata to Delhi in 1911 New Delhi was built in the area of ??4000 acres from 1911 to 1931. Today the capital of India is New Delhi. Here British constructed many government buildings, out of which Secretariat Bhawan, India Gate, Parliament House, Rashtrapati Bhawan are the chiefs. The Secretariat was built between 1911 and 1927. Its architect was Herbert Baker. India Gate was done in the memory of the soldiers of the mighty soldiers of Veergati in World War II. It was constructed between 1921 and 1933. It was designed by Edwin Lutyens. The name of 13,218 soldiers is mentioned on this. The construction of the Rashtrapati Bhawan was held from 1912 to 1929. It is also called Raisina Hills. There are 340 rooms in total. There is also a Mughal garden. KNOT Place is a business center. It was also built in British period.

Besides the University of Mumbai, British, University of Calcutta, Madras University, St. John's College (Agra), Madras High Court, Ripon Building (Chennai), Raj Bhawan (Nainital), Raj Bhavan (Kolkata), Lucknow railway station, Bangalore Assembly, Prayagraj High Court etc. was formed.

After independence,

there has been a lot of progress in architecture in India. India's modern architecture is contemporary in the world. Even in Indian temples, the effect of modern art is visible. The Lotus Temple of Delhi is the best example.

 

Hindu temples of modern times

  • The temple built by the Birla family is a beautiful model of modern architecture. There are about 20 Birla temples in India.
  • The Somnath Temple was destroyed by Mahmud Ghaznavi, who was re-created after the independence of law by the Parliament in 1951. It has unique specimen of ancient and modern art.
  • Tulsi Manas Mandir was completed in 1964, it is located in Varanasi.
  • Akshardham Temple is the temple of Swaminarayan sect. Akshardham Temple of Delhi and Ahmedabad is famous.
  • ISKCON is dedicated to the temples of Lord Krishna. Country- A big series of these temples in the world.
