UGC NET 2019

On behalf of UGC, the Central Board of Secondary Education announces holding of the National Eligibility Test (NET)  for determining the eligibility of Indian nationals for the Eligibility for Assistant Professor only or Junior Research Fellowship & Eligibility for Assistant Professor Both in Indian Universities and Colleges.

CBSE will  conducted the NET in 84 subjects at 91 selected Cities of spread across the country. 

The candidates who qualify for the award of Junior Research Fellowship are eligible to pursue research in the subject of their post-graduation or in a related subject and are also eligible for Assistant Professor. The universities, institutions, IITs and other national organizations may select the JRF awardees for whole time research work in accordance with the procedure prescribed by them. The award of JRF and Eligibility for Assistant Professor both OR Eligibility for Assistant Professor only will depend on the performance of the candidate in all three papers of NET. However, the candidates qualifying exclusively for Assistant Professor will not be considered for award of JRF.

UGC NET December, 2019

(i) Mode of Examination: The Examination shall be conducted as Computer Based Test (CBT) only.

(ii) Pattern: The Test will consist of two papers. Both the papers will consist of objective type questions.

There will be no break between papers.

(iii) Duration : 3 Hours

Andhman and Nicobar Island, Andra Pradesh, Arunachal, Assam, Bihar, Cahdigarh, Cahttisgarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli,Daman and Diu (UT), Delhi, Goa, Gujrat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and KAshmir, Jharkhand, Karnatka,Kerala, Lukshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Maipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Punducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telandgana, Tripura, Uttarpradesh, Uttrakhand, West Bengal.


i) Candidates who have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in Master s Degree OR equivalent examination from universities/institutions recognised by UGC  in Humanities (including languages) and Social Science, Computer Science &Applications, Electronic Science etc. are eligible for this Test.

OBC, SC, ST, PwD category candidates who have secured at least 50% marks (without rounding off) in Master s degree or equivalent examination are eligible for this Test.

ii) Candidates who are pursuing their Master's degree or equivalent course and whose result is still awaited may also apply for this test. 

Such candidates must complete their Masters degree or equivalent examination within two years from the date of NET result with required percentage of marks, failing which they shall be treated as disqualified.

iii) Candidates belonging to third gender in other words transgender would be eligible to draw the same relaxation in fee, age and qualifying criteria for NET (i.e. Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor) as are available to SC/ST/PwD categories. The subject wise cut-offs for this category should be the lowest among those for SC/ST/PwD/OBC NCL categories in the corresponding subject.

iv) The Ph.D. degree holders whose Master s level examination had been completed by 19th September 1991 (irrespective of date of declaration of result) shall be eligible for a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks (i.e. from 55% to 50%) for appearing in NET. 

v) Candidates are advised to appear in the subject of their post graduation only. The candidates, whose post graduation subject is not covered in the list of subjects in item No.14  may appear in a related subject.

vi) Candidates are neither required to send any certificates/documents in support of their eligibility nor printout of their Application Form (Confirmation Page) to CBSE. However the candidates, in their own interest, must satisfy themselves about their eligibility for the Test. In the event of any ineligibility being detected by the UGC/CBSE at any stage, their candidature will be cancelled and they shall be liable for legal action.

vii) Candidates having post-graduate diploma/certificate awarded by Indian University/ Institute or foreign degree/diploma/certificate awarded by the foreign University/institute should in their own interest, ascertain the equivalence of their diploma/degree/certificate with Master s degree of recognized Indian universities from Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi. (

Age Limit:  Junior Research Fellowship: Not more than 30 years as on 01.07.2019.

A relaxation up to 5 years is provided to the candidates belonging to OBC / SC/ST/PwD/Transgender categories and to women applicants. 

Three years relaxation in age will be permissible to the candidates possessing L.L.M. Degree. A relaxation of up to 5 years is provided to the candidates who have served in the armed forces subject to the length of service in the armed forces up to the first day of the month in which the concerned UGC-NET is to be held. Total age relaxation on the above ground(s) shall not exceed five years under any circumstances.

Assistant Professor: There is no upper age limit for applying for eligibility for Assistant Professor.

How To Apply:

Examination Fees

  • Rs. 1000/- for General.
  • Rs. 500/- for Other Backward Classes (Non-creamylayer).
  • Rs. 250/- for SC/ST/PwD/ Transgender.

Steps to be followed

Step-1: Apply for Online Registration using unique Email Id and Mobile No.

Step-2: Fill in the Online Application Form and note down the system generated Application No.

Step-3: Upload scanned images of Candidate’s Photograph (file size: 10 kb - 200 kb) and Candidate’s Signature (file size: 4kb - 30kb) in JPG/JPEG format.

Step-4: Pay fee using SBI/Syndicate/HDFC/ICICI/Paytm Payment Gateway through

  • Debit Card
  • Credit Card
  • Net Banking

keep proof of fee paid.

In case the Confirmation Page is not generated after payment of fee then the transaction is cancelled, and amount will be refunded to the candidate’s account. However, the candidate has to make another transaction, in case the Confirmation Page is not generate .

Download, save and print copies of Confirmation Page after successful remittance of fee and keep copies safely for future reference.

Candidates should visit the NTA website and check their e-mails regularly for latest updates.

Any request to change the Examination Centre, Date, Shift and NET Subject provided on the Admit Card shall not be considered under any circumstances.
